I have history of working with adults with a variety of diagnoses. This includes autism, dementia, and psychiatric disorders. I am able to work sensitively with these client groups to maintain and develop their sense of self and awareness of others.
Adults with autism have often found lots of ways to adapt to the world, but sometimes still need a bit more support! Music therapy is well placed for adults with autism to seek emotional expression through playing instruments, rather than having to find the words for how they feel.
Music has a very strong connection with people with dementia and other age-related illnesses. It can be a powerful tool to reconnect families in music therapy groups, or offers a sense of relief for somebody who is anxious, or struggling with an illness.
Music therapy has been used to support psychosis diagnoses for a long time. People with psychosis sometimes find usual frames of reference confusing. As such, talking-therapies can be very difficult for them to maintain. Music therapy creates new sets of rules for conversation and interaction, and the person with psychosis can begin to exist in a newly created world with the therapist.
Music therapy can be a very strange concept for adults, and there are naturally lots of questions that come with it!
Absolutely not! Music therapy is an allied health profession which can support people in a range of mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, and even stress! There is so much a music therapist can do to tailor their sessions to you, so please don't hesitate to get in touch.
Music therapy, as a psychological intervention, is much like talking therapy. You can have as much or as little as you like. I like to work in batches of 6 sessions at a time just for consistency, but you can do this for as long or as little as you like!
I would definitely ask you if you wanted to! But there is no pressure in music therapy to play the instruments - the beauty is that you can talk when you don't want to play and play when you don't want to talk. We can write songs, listen to music, meditate, all within the scope of music therapy. If playing instruments is anxiety provoking for you, let me know and we will put it aside.
Get in touch for information about costs. I have spaces available for people who cannot afford to pay the full cost but these are limited.
There's room for negotiation here! I prefer to work in client's homes so that they can be comfortable with the privacy, but sometimes this isn't possible. Depending on what our therapy sessions look like, I can host some at mine.
